Arc Notching Process | A Complete Guide to High-Precision Machining of Pipe Arc Notching and Cutting

What is Notching?

Commonly used pipe cutting methods include circular sawing for right-angle or angled cuts. When the pipe is not a straight pipe and has already been bent, notching is a crucial metal pipe processing technique. This involves using a specialized die to punch a notch of a specific shape at the end or side of the pipe. This process allows two or more pipes to fit together at a precise angle, an essential preparatory step before subsequent welding or assembly. If the method needs to be changed, arc punching or milling is typically used. Compared to traditional milling or grinding, notching offers advantages such as speed, precision, and cost-effectiveness, making it particularly suitable for mass production.

Wide range of application industries

Transportation vehicles: Bicycle frames, electric motorcycle and motorbike frames, car seat brackets and exhaust pipes.
Metal furniture: Structural components such as steel pipe chairs, table legs, and bed frames.
Other applications: Tubular structure products such as sports equipment, strollers, and display racks.

Applicable materials and shapes

HoChier Machinery's arc notching machine is highly flexible and can handle a variety of materials and tube shapes:

Notch shape: Custom-cut V-shaped, U-shaped, beveled, or complex curved notches can be produced to ensure a perfect fit.
Applicable materials: Metal pipes such as carbon steel pipes, stainless steel pipes, aluminum pipes, and copper pipes.
Applicable pipe types: Round tubes, square tubes, rectangular tubes and various special-shaped tubes.
Applied to:Motorcycle frames, bicycle frames, automotive structural components, furniture fittings

Industry advantages of arc striking

🔹 High precision: The precise arc notching improves the tightness of pipe welding and ensures welding strength better than simple cutting.
🔹Easier to weld after processing: After the end of the pipe fitting is machined into an arc shape, it can be directly matched with another pipe fitting.Accelerate subsequent welding and assembly efficiency.
🔹Multi-angle/Multi-process flexibility: Modern arc punching machines can achieve this. 0~180 degree angle adjustmentIt can quickly change angles and curves according to different design requirements.

Arc Notch vs Press vs Laser cutting

✓ Advantages of arc notching machines: Compared with traditional hydraulic presses, they are lower in cost, cheaper, easier to operate, and safer.

✓ Lasers are suitable for multi-functional and complex cutting, but for needs such as "post-bending processing, high-strength structural parts, mass production, and thick pipe joining", arc notching is still an irreplaceable key equipment.

Arc notch has an absolute advantage that lasers cannot match and cannot replace in production scenarios with "high volume, standardization, and extreme requirements for cost and efficiency", as well as in specific process requirements that "heat-affected zones are not allowed and three-dimensional forming is required". This is why arc-forming equipment remains the mainstay on mature production lines in industries such as automobiles, bicycles, and furniture.

What problems does arc notching machining need to solve?

The purpose of arc notch is to create arc-shaped openings on straight pipes and to cut arc-shaped openings after bending pipes. This is generally used for pipe fittings that need to be welded; a perfect cut allows for welding and creating a finished product. Its applications are very wide-ranging. Therefore, pipe fittings that need to be welded often require arc-shaped openings, as the arc-shaped opening allows for a higher degree of weld tightness. This improves the weld tightness and structural quality of pipe fittings. It is suitable for pre-welding treatment and automated production of metal pipes and bends.

What materials can be processed?

We currently have considerable experience with iron pipes/iron fittings/black iron pipes. We are currently conducting tests on pipe fittings made of different materials.
